  This stunning bar is like nothing else in the city. With its superb fit out and multiple distinct spaces, 1885 has all the ingredients for a serious night out. The interior is a clever blend of restored heritage features with rich contemporary styling: the main room, with massive wooden beams, a high ceiling and raw concrete bar gives way to the 1930s-inspired G.H. Mumm Champagne Room.

  Opposite, the original warehouse doors open out onto a long covered veranda: the perfect vantage point for watching the Britomart nightlife go by.

• AMANO

  The quality of the ingredient is at the heart of everything Amano does because here it's about real food. Bread and pasta are hand-made with organic, New Zealand-grown wheat milled on-site. Seafood is chosen strictly on how it's fished and the sustainability of its species. As for the meat, whole carcasses are bought direct from the farm to ensure everything from nose to tail is respected—and it's cooked exclusively over coals.

  This philosophy is applied equally passionately to the venue's design, with the striking terrazzo floor laid with marble offcuts, and the mother-of-pearl countertops made from discarded oyster shells. With a hyper-seasonal menu that changes daily, the restaurant revolves around provenance, seasonality, and sustainability.

  Sid Sahrawat is one of New Zealand's most exciting chefs. He and wife Chand have always wanted to showcase their heritage through contemporary cuisine, marrying Sid's creative culinary skills with the traditional dishes he grew up with in India—classic spice and flavour combinations re- worked with modern and local New Zealand ingredients.

• CARETAKER

  Caretaker is an intimate, New York-style cocktail bar inspired by the golden era of bar tending. Its focus is on reviving forgotten classics from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, with emphasis on thoughtful service, fresh fruit, fine spirits and hand-cut ice.

  This atmospheric basement bar features cosy tables with tops made from recycled timber, leather seats, smoky mirrors and dark woods. The ceiling consists of 1,000 broom handles, waxed and varnished by hand.
  Caretaker's set cocktail menu changes weekly, but your hosts will happily create you a custom cocktail to suit your mood and taste.
